The Cold Pitch That Got Us Into The New York Times Two Weeks After Launch
A skill honed over more than a decade as a reporter, now put to work for my clients and myself -- and how you can apply it too.
I received dozens — if not hundreds — of pitches per day as a reporter for places including Bloomberg, BuzzFeed and The Information. And I ignored most of them.
That is the life of a reporter. Most pitches get deleted without reading, if they even get the attention or credence to be marked off for the trash bin vs perishing into an inbox black hole.
So how did my cold pitch to the New York Times, about a brand new podcast and to a reporter I’d never spoken with before, not only get answered within 7 minutes but also land We Are Spiraling coverage just two weeks after launch?
In this post, I’ll outline how I did it, and how you can pitch like a journalist too.
